Wines on Show |
Adelaide Hills, South Australia
This very successful wine and olive oil property took its name from a 19th-century gold mine. It is the venture of the Nugent family, headed by Dr Michael Nugent. Son Andrew Nugent is a Roseworthy graduate, and his wife, Susie, manages the olive oil side of the business. The family also has properties on the Fleurieu Peninsula and in the Clare Valley, the latter providing both riesling and shiraz (and olives from 100-year-old wild olive trees). In 2007 a state-of-the-art winery and a straw and mud barrel cellar were completed.

First tasting of the new to release Nest Egg 2008 Chardonnay, as well as other wines from the Nest Egg range and new release wines. by Farr & Farr Rising
by Farr - In 1994 Gary Farr and family planted 12 ha of clonally selected viognier, chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz at a density of 7000 vines per ha on a north-facing hill directly opposite the Bannockburn Winery. The quality of the wines is exemplary, their character subtly different from those of Bannockburn itself due, in Farr's view, to the interaction of the terroir of the hill and the clonal selection. Farr Rising - Nicholas Farr is the son of Gary Farr, and with encouragement from his father he has launched his own brand with conspicuous success. He learned his winemaking in France and Australia, and has access to some excellent base material, hence the quality of the wines. These vineyards compare well with the best sites for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay anywhere in the world. The winery was purpose built by Gary and Nick, maintaining the ideal temperature of 16-degrees Celcius all year.

Clayfield Wines
Grampians, Victoria
Clayfield Wines, established in 1999 by winemaker Simon Clayfield and specialising in high quality Grampians Shiraz from estate grown grapes and locally grown fruit. Clayfield Wines produces such fine examples of Grampians regional Shiraz, with consistent quality, that is have earned an envious reputation. Clayfield's Moyston vineyard was established during 1997 to 1999; the first commercial crop was then destroyed by grass fire in 2002. The recovery phase has taken time, but the vines are now undoubtably producing consistently good fruit.
Recent planting of Durif vines, adds to Clayfield's vineyards of Shiraz and the troublesome Merlot (difficult in this region but worthy of the effort). Clayfield practices "green" and sustainable vineyard practices and also makes wines using traditional and natural winemaking methods. The future will see interesting blends and wonderful wines - "the best is yet to come".

Darling Park
Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
Established in 1988, Darling Park has built an enviable reputation for producing wines that not only reflect their cool climate Mornington Peninsula origins but also reveal clear personality, depth and life. Wines that encourage conversation with an appreciation of the art that is on, and in, every bottle.
Darling Park has the oldest Pinot Gris vines on the Peninsula along with McCabe's in Tucks Road. T'Gallant wines were made here until they found their permanent home in Main Ridge. The vineyard is now planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
Darling Park's labels are well known for their beautiful artworks. The initial labelling made use of lovely Rubanesque romantic images - then details of paintings from the Wallace Collection were chosen - and more recently the work of modern Australian artists such as Arthur Boyd, John Olsen, Sidney Nolan, John Percival and Charles Blackman from the Liberman family collection.

Farago Hill Wines
Southern Highlands, New South Wales
The Farago Hill vineyard was established in Canyonleigh in 2001; a Southern Highlands locality of New South Wales, that is developing a name as a premium cool climate wine region.
Vineyard owners, Ricardo Farago and Katrina Hill, named their wine in honour of their fathers, neither of whom had the pleasure of being around to see the dream realised. Ricardo, born in Argentina, has always longed for the summers of his childhood, spent in vineyards of Mendoza. Katrina grew up in a wine-loving family, with a love of the land - loves now merged in the planting of a vineyard.
The intention of Farago Hill Wines was to produce a wine equal in quality to the best Pinot Gris of Europe and they are receiving wonderful feedback from professional and amateur palletes, alike, that Farago Hill wine is very enjoyable.

Fox Gordon
Adelaide Hills, South Australia
This is the venture of three very well-known figures in the wine industry: Jane Gordon, Rachel Atkins (náe Fox) and Natasha Mooney. Natasha Mooney (Tash) has had first-class experience in the Barossa Valley, particularly during her time as chief winemaker at Barossa Valley Estate. She and her partners wanted to produce small quantities of high-quality wine which would allow them time to look after their children, the venture planned in the shade of the wisteria tree in Tash's back garden. The grapes come from dry-grown vineyards farmed under biodiversity principles which, says Mooney, makes the winemaker's job easy. Classy packaging adds the final touch.

Golding
Adelaide Hills, South Australia
The Golding family has lived in the Lobethal area of the Adelaide Hills for several generations, and is one of the larger vignerons, owning and operating three separate vineyards with around 40 ha planted to pinot noir, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet franc and merlot. In 2002 the Golding Wines brand was created, the owners being Darren and Lucy Golding, together with Darren's parents, Connie and Greg. In 2006 Darren secured some Marlborough sauvignon blanc through his brother-in-law, who happens to be managing director of NZ's largest independent contract winemaking company. This has resulted in three wines: The Local (100% estate-grown); The Tourist (100% Marlborough); and The Leap (51% estate-grown/49% Marlborough).

Mount Langi Ghiran
Grampians, Victoria
A maker of outstanding cool-climate peppery Shiraz, crammed with flavour and vinosity, and very good Cabernet Sauvignon. The Shiraz points the way for cool-climate examples of the variety. The business was acquired by the Rathbone family group in 2002, and hence the marketing has been integrated with the Yering Station, Parker Coonawarra and Xanadu Estate wines, a synergistic mix with no overlap.
Winemaker Dan Buckle joined Mount Langi Ghiran in 2003, and brings to the team not only a great breadth of winemaking experience gain the Australia and abroad, but skills across a variety of disciplines (and a lovely winery dog called Ruby). Since then, Mount Langi Ghiran has been hosting many young European spies and this has brought depth and interest to each vintage at Mount Langi Ghiran.
Also to note, Dan has been awarded a scholarship to the Len Evans Tutorial, and have been involved in wine judging, as Associate Judge at The Macquarie Bank Sydney Royal Wine Show, and as a judge at Cowra Wine Show.

Mount View Estate
Hunter Valley, New South Wales
Mount View Estate was purchased from Harry Tulloch in 2000 by John and Polly Burgess. Since then, their dedication to quality has seen them win numerous awards including trophies for thier Shiraz, Semillon, Merlot, Rose, Chardonnay and fortifieds. In 2005, John and Polly purchased a second vineyard "Limestone Creek" a few kilometres away on Mt View Road.
All wines are grown, made and sold through the estate, with single vineyard wines being kept separate. This give the Mount View Estate wines a sense of place; the customer knows exactly where the wine comes from and the range of wine displays a true expression of Hunter Valley terroir. Mt View Estate has mature vines, dating back to 1971 and contributing to consistently good quality.
Winemaker Janelle Zerk is a fifth generation member of the Barossa Valley "Zerk" winemaking family. Helping her family in the vineyard at age five led her to the decision (natural progression) to become a winemaker. With an ambition to make great wine and learn as much as she can from others along the way, Janelle has established a reputation in the Hunter Valley, with considerable experience in vintages through Tuscany, California and Burgundy.

Nepenthe
Adelaide Hills, South Australia
Nepenthe (Nuh-pen-thee) started as a dream - that of the Tweddell family - a dream of owning a vineyard and winery and having their own labe.
The name Nepenthee is drawn from one of the most famous works of historic Greek poet Homer. In "The Odyssey", Homer described Nepenthee as an ancient Egyptian herbal drink so powerful it eases the grief and banishes sorrow from the mind.
The modern Nepenthe has made its home in the lofty heights of the Adelaide Hills, a stunningly beautiful region with a rollling tapestry of green hills, gum trees and vineyards. Through a combination of careful viticulture and small-batch winemaking, Nepenthe has quickly established a reputation as a substantial producer of high quality wines.

Rutherglen Estates
Rutherglen, Victoria
Rutherglen Estates is an offshoot of a far larger contract crush-and-make business, with a winery capacity of 4000 tonnes (roughly equivalent to 280 000 cases). Rutherglen is in a declared phylloxera region, which mean that all the grapes grown in that region have to be vinified within it, itself a guarantee of business for ventures such as Rutherglen Estates. It also means that some of the best available material can be allocated for the brand, with an interesting mix of varieties. Smart, upgraded, packaging is yet another part of the marketing mix. Exports to the UK, the US and other major markets.

Summerfield Wines
Pyrenees, Victoria
A specialist red wine producer, the particular forte of which is Shiraz. The red wines are consistently excellent: luscious and full-bodied and fruit-driven, but with a slice of vanillin oak to top them off. Founder Ian Summerfield has now handed over the winemaking reins to son Mark, who, with consulting advice, produces consistently outstanding and awesomely concentrated Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, both in varietal and Reserve forms. The red wines are built for the long haul, and richly repay cellaring.
Mark Summerfield is a self-educated winemaker like his father Ian, and has taken the Summerfield label from strength to strength with many trophies and gold medals recieved from events around the globe.
Summerfield are rated as a five red star winery by James Halliday, representing the top eight percent of wineries in Australia.

Tamburlaine Wines
Lower Hunter Valley, New South Wales
A thriving business which, notwithstanding the fact that it has doubled its already substantial production in recent years, sells over 90% of its wine through the cellar door and by mailing list (with an active tasting club members' cellar program offering wines which are held and matured at Tamburlaine). The maturing of the estate-owned Orange vineyard has led to a dramatic rise in quality across the range. Both the Hunter Valley and Orange vineyards are now Australian Certified Organic.

Clare Valley, South Australia
The family-founded and owned Taylors continues to flourish and expand, its vineyards now total over 500 ha, by far the largest holding in Clare Valley. There have also been substantial changes both in terms of the winemaking team and in terms of the wine style and quality, particularly through the outstanding St Andrews range. With each passing vintage, Taylors is managing to do the same for the Clare Valley as Peter Lehmann is doing for the Barossa Valley.
Following proudly in the footsteps of his father Bill Taylor, and grandfather Bill Taylor Snr, Mitchell Taylor was appointed MD of Taylors Wines in 2000. Mitchell's passion for the wine industry has led him to work in all facets of the family business - from export to finance - as well have keeping a very hands on role in the winemaking process.

The Cups Estate
Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
Joe Fisicaro has returned to his roots after a career as a financial executive, establishing The Cups Estate near Rye. The name comes from the rolling dune region of the Peninsula known as 'the cups country'; the soils are light, with relatively low fertility, but drainage is excellent. Wind and frost have been problems, and the composition of the 6.15-ha vineyard has been somewhat modified by a grafting program placing more emphasis on early ripening varieties.

Tomich Wines
Adelaide Hills, South Australia
Address: 87 King William Road, Unley

Phone: 08 8272 9388 Website: www.tomich.com.au
Tomich Hill Wines was established by the Tomich family to develop a premium, cool-climate vineyard. Tomich Wines, is nestled in the Adelaide Hills, along the Onkaparinga River, just north of Woodside.
There is an element of irony in this family venture. Patriarch John Tomich was born on a vineyard near Mildura, where he learnt firsthand the skills and knowledge required for premium grapegrowing. He went on to become a well-known Adelaide ear, nose and throat specialist. He has taken the wheel full circle with postgraduate studies at the University of Adelaide, resulting in a diploma in winemaking in 2002, and now venturing on to the Master of Wine revision course from the Institute of Masters of Wine.
His son Randal, Winemaker and Viticuturist, is a cutting from the old vine (metaphorically speaking), having invented new equipment and techniques for tending the family's 80-ha vineyard in the Adelaide Hills near Woodside; resulting in a 60% saving in time and fuel costs. Most of the grapes are sold, but the amount of wine made under the Tomich Hill brand is far from a hobby.
Randal has over 20 years farming experience with the last 10 years devoted to creating the family vineyard at Woodside. His interest in vines and wines lead him to the development of Soilworks Australia, a business which recognizes him as a world leader in the development of vineyards and forests.

Lower Hunter Valley, New South Wales
Tower Estate was founded by the late Len Evans, with the 5-star Tower Lodge accommodation and convention centre part of the development. It is anticipated there will be little day-to-day change in either part of the business. Tower Estate will continue to draw upon varieties and regions which have a particular synergy, the aim being to make the best possible wines in the top sector of the wine market.
Scott Stephens, Winemaker, joined Tower Estate in late 2005. His notable experience includes winemaking positions at McWilliams Mount Pleasant and De Bortoli, as well as vintages in France, California and Coonawarra. It is Scott's experience teamed with the vast viticultural contacts of former Chairman, the late Len Evans, that makes Tower Estate wines renown for the production of premium quality wines.

Willespie Wines
Margaret River, Western Australia
Willespie is a small family-owned (3 generations) winery in the prestigious Wilyabrup sub region – the golden triangle – of Margaret River. Established in 1976 vines are old for the region and are dry-grown/unirrigated. Willespie specializes in aged wines with the oldest portfolio of current reds on offer in the region. The combination of dry-grown older vines and aging creates wines of great intensity and complexity. Reds feature softened tannins and the aged whites on offer are generous with softened, rounder/clean dry acids, great length and body.

Xanadu
Margaret River, Western Australia
Xanadu fell prey to over-ambitious expansion and to the increasingly tight trading conditions in 2005 as wine surpluses hit hard. The assets were acquired by the Rathbone Group, completing the Yering Station/Mount Langi Ghiran/Parker Coonawarra Estate/Xanadu group. The prime assets were (and are) the 130 ha of vineyards and a winery to match. The increasing production is matched by exports to 18 markets, led by the UK and the US.

Yering Station
Yarra Valley, Victoria
The historic Yering Station (or at least the portion of the property on which the cellar door sales and vineyard are established) was purchased by the Rathbone family in 1996 and is now the site of a joint venture with French Champagne house Devaux. A spectacular and very large winery has been erected which handles the Yarrabank sparkling wines and the Yering Station and Yarra Edge table wines. It has immediately become one of the focal points of the Yarra Valley, particularly as the historic Chateau Yering, where luxury accommodation and fine dining are available, is next door. Yering Station's own restaurant is open every day for lunch, providing the best cuisine in the Valley.
In July 2008, winemaker Tom Carson moved to take up the position of Group Winemaker/General Manager of Heathcote Estate and Yabby Lake Vineyard, with overall responsibility for winemaking at those two properties. His replacement is William (Willy) Lunn, a graduate of Adelaide University with more than 24 years' cool-climate winemaking experience around the world, including Petaluma, Shaw & Smith and Argyle Winery (Oregon).
